Hi, I’m Janske Dekkers, a soon-to-be graduate of Communication and Multimedia Design (CMD). Throughout my studies, I’ve explored a wide range of creative disciplines, ultimately finding my passion in storytelling through video and film. I love translating concepts into engaging visual narratives, capturing emotions, and connecting with audiences.

I’m a conceptual thinker, always curious and eager to learn new things. I find inspiration everywhere and enjoy experimenting with fresh ideas, whether it’s through hands-on projects or diving into new creative techniques.

PROJECTS

Vrij (2024)

In the short film “Vrij”, created during my minor, 21-year-old Nathan realizes that his predictable life doesn’t reflect his true passion. Under the pressure of family and friends, he hides his love for dance. A heated conflict brings his deep longing for freedom and self-expression to the surface.

For this project, I was responsible for the cinematography and color grading, using light and color to emphasize Nathan’s journey towards self-acceptance and authenticity.

Tussenruimte (2025)

During my minor Time Based Media at the HKU, I created “Tussenruimte,” a short film that explores the life of a student who feels lost and afraid to move forward after submitting her thesis. The film begins with a quiet stillness, contrasting her stagnation with the bustling world around her. Through visual storytelling and music, without dialogue, I convey her inner struggle. As she enters a dark mental space, an internal monologue reveals her thoughts and emotions through introspection and association. I use close-ups to create intimacy with the character, while wide shots highlight the vastness of the world and her sense of smallness within it.

One-minute (2024)

For my minor at the HKU, I researched the concept of the “black hole” after graduation. As the first version of this project, I created an experimental video that takes the viewer through everything you lose when your studies come to an end. Using sound and complementary visuals, the video guides you along this timeline.

Ons gedrag (2023)

What has changed in how the Dutch population approaches social issues compared to the past 60 years? Beyond film, I have a deep interest in human behavior. What drives us to act in certain ways, and why did we start doing things like that? I wondered how our behavior influenced social challenges in the past and whether we could learn valuable lessons from it.

With this project, I wanted to combine these two interests. Initially, my research question was: “What is the influence of World War II on the current behavioral patterns of the Dutch population?” However, I realized this approach placed too much focus on World War II, while my main fascination lay in human behavior.

I began exploring which significant social issues still affect us today and how I could visualize them through film or animation. After experimenting with different approaches, I developed a film/documentary style. Driven by my curiosity, I explored two social challenges and developed the concept: “Ons Gedrag: Als We Toen Wisten Wat We Nu Weten.”
